hat's the hottest movie filming in Canada this year? It has to be Hairspray. Adapted from the Broadway musical, which itself was based on the 1988 movie, the film stars A-listers John Travolta (in drag!), Michelle Pfeiffer, Queen Latifah plus hot up-and-comers Bynes (She's the Man), Efron (High School Musical), Snow (John Tucker Must Die) and Kelley (Take the Lead).
Set in 1962, the film focuses on pleasantly plump teen Tracy Turnblad (Nicole Blonsky), who realizes her dream of becoming a regular on a popular television dance show. She uses her new fame to speak out against segregation and ends up in a competition for Miss Auto Show 1963.
Teen Tribute's Bonnie Laufer-Krebs got a sneak peek during a visit to the Toronto set and talked to a few of the stars about filming this fabulously fun film.

(Tracy's scheming rival)

What did you do when you got the call you had the part?
It was ridiculous. I was freaking out. I had tried out three or four times. When I found out I got it I was in the middle of moving my apartment and I dropped all my boxes and screamed. I called all my friends and we went out that night and celebrated.

Talk about seeing John Travolta dressed up as Edna Turnblad.
He came out in his whole costume and he was so happy. He was so excited. He came out and was shaking his butt. We were all in shock than we were all laughing for 20 minutes.

Link Larkin
(Dance show heartthrob)

How was it going from the huge success of High School Musical to getting the phone call that you were in Hairspray?
It was amazing. There really is no better step for me than to do another musical. This role has a very different feel, it's much more adult which helps that Disney image thing. It's a great transition.

Is this more challenging?
This is 10 times the dance and song we had to do in high school musical. I think everyone if doing extremely well. I never in a million years pictured myself doing the dancing I am doing in this.

You must be pinching yourself to make sure you're not dreaming about working with this amazing cast.
A few times every day. We had the table read a few weeks back and I was sitting at a table with John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, Queen Latifah. I was freaking out. It's weird. Every day I get to wake up and work with Amanda. She's had a show catering to my demographic since I was little, so it's ridiculous to be able to actually be working with her.

Penny Pingleton
(Tracy Turnblad's best friend)

You must love working on this film.

This is so far the best thing I have ever been a part of. It is just so magical. I feel like I am part of something special.

Did you ever see the play on Broadway?
I saw it once on Broadway and I saw the movie many times when I was growing up and I watched it again when I got the part. I am so excited and we're keeping it true to the movie.

Are you planning to do more comedy after this?
I definitely want to host Saturday Night Live one day.

Seaweed J. Stubbs
(Dancer extraordinaire)

What happened when you got the call?
I was at my best friend's place and I was freaking. I was stressing about a girl but as soon as I got the call I was jumping up and down. The girl called after and I was like 'no more troubles. We're good.'

How much of a challenge was this film?
I have been singing in church all my life, and to be able to put that out there and to have this as a platform to show my voice and my dancing and everything. Every gift that I have and every talent I have, I get to display in this movie. It's a dream come true.

Can you believe this cast?
I don't know if anyone gets to work with this many great people in the course of a career and I have everything in one movie. It's great for all the young cast members, there's so much to learn.
